Authorities have identified the four victims who lost their lives in the tragic mass shooting that took place in Dadeville, Alabama.
The Tallapoosa County Coroner’s office has confirmed that the victims were Philstavious Dowdell, 18, Corbin Dahmontrey Holston, 23, Shaunkivia Nicole Smith, 17, and Marsiah Emmanuel Collins, 19.
The shooting occurred during a birthday party being held for a cheerleader on campus, with the mother of the girl also being wounded during the incident.
Philstavious Dowdell was a star high school athlete who had recently committed to Jacksonville State to further his athletic career. His untimely death has left his family and the community devastated.
Dowdell’s coach, Jack Ford, expressed his condolences, saying, “We are all in shock and disbelief. Phil was not only an incredible athlete but also an exceptional young man with a bright future ahead of him.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”
Lake Martin Community Hospital, where the victims were initially taken for treatment, has provided an update on the patients’ conditions. According to the hospital’s marketing director, Heidi Smith, 15 patients were brought to the emergency room following the shooting. All of the patients were teenagers, and all had suffered gunshot wounds.
Due to inclement weather, some patient transfers were delayed, but as soon as conditions improved, most of the patients were transferred to other hospitals. Of the patients who needed to be transferred, five were in critical condition and four were considered stable.
Smith stated that the tragedy has been particularly difficult for the small community of Dadeville, and she expressed sympathy for the affected families. “Just knowing that this could have easily been one of your own children or your children’s friends, it’s so close to home,” Smith said.
Multiple law enforcement agencies are currently investigating the shooting, including the Dadeville Police Department, Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Office, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), FBI, and the 5th Circuit District Attorney’s Office. Central Alabama CrimeStoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the identification and arrest of the suspect(s) involved. They are also asking anyone with video footage of the incident to share it with law enforcement.
The shooting has left the community of Dadeville in shock and disbelief, and people are speaking out in support of the affected families.
The Community Foundation of East Alabama has established a “Caring for Dadeville Fund” to provide resources to organizations supporting and addressing the needs of the families and the community at large.
