Phil Hubbard is a former American professional basketball player who played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1978 to 1988. He was born on December 13, 1956 in Canton, Ohio. He attended the University of Michigan, where he was a three-time All-Big Ten selection and a two-time All-American. He was drafted by the Detroit Pistons in the first round of the 1978 NBA Draft. During his 10-year NBA career, Hubbard played for the Pistons, the Cleveland Cavaliers, the New Jersey Nets, and the Los Angeles Lakers. He averaged 8.2 points and 4.7 rebounds per game in his career. He was a member of the Pistons' 1989 NBA championship team. After retiring from the NBA, Hubbard became a basketball coach. He was an assistant coach for the Pistons from 1989 to 1992 and the head coach of the Continental Basketball Association's Grand Rapids Hoops from 1993 to 1995. In 2015, Hubbard was hired as an assistant coach for Jeonju KCC Egis in the Korean Basketball League in South Korea.
From 2011-2014, Hubbard coached in the NBA G League as an assistant coach with the Los Angeles D-Fenders and Santa Cruz Warriors and before becoming Head Coach of the Los Angeles D-Fenders/South Bay Lakers in 2014-2015.
After first serving as an NBA scout after his playing career ended, Hubbard became an assistant coach in the NBA. From 1997-2009 Hubbard was an assistant coach with the Atlanta Hawks (1997-2000), Golden State Warriors (2000-2003) and Washington Wizards (2003-2009).
