In a new interview with The Sunday Times, Turner revealed that, due to extreme dieting, "I stopped having my period for a year—that’s when I decided to have therapy." The actress also revealed that social media had a huge impact on her well-being, as other people's comments about her appearance were inescapable.

"I was too aware of my body at a young age," she told The Sunday Times. Turner continued, "It just kind of took over my mind, it was all I would think about. Calorie counting, everything. 'Oh, I’ll just eat nuts today.'" She also credits her now-husband, Joe Jonas, with helping her overcome her health issues.

According to Turner, when she first started dating Jonas, she was "going through this phase of being very mentally unwell." But it was Jonas's love and support that the actress says helped her to stop extreme diets, and to learn to love her body. She told The Sunday Times, "I think he kind of saved my life, in a way." Turner and Jonas got married in a surprise Las Vegas wedding in May 2019.
